My first company, Curious Lion, helps clients create custom training solutions for its employees and customers.

At first, I was able to leverage my personal network to get leads.  

This worked out well in the first year and helped my get on my feet. I was lucky, not everyone makes a smooth transition from a corporate job to owning their own business. In fact, when the first check arrived in the mail, I had to pinch myself - I will never forget the elation of opening that first check!

But luck doesn't last forever.

Soon I faced the same problem all B2B businesses face: I didn’t have a sustainable pipeline of sales leads.  

After the first few projects were successfully completed, and the clients were happy, I assumed they’d come back for more.

But the need wasn’t there.

Budgets were not approved.

Timing wasn’t right.

In short, the business was not repeatable.

I didn’t know what to do next.

I was scared.

Suddenly I went from collecting checks and delivering work to staring at my inbox, hoping for new business.

Things had come quite easily in the beginning, but they weren’t easy any more. I wondered to myself where the next deal would come from. I couldn’t sit around and wait for my current clients to need a new training solution. I had to go out and find new business. I had to build a pipeline to replenish deals when we completed current projects.

This was my first real test as a business owner.

Am I cut out for this new game of prospecting strangers?

I realized very quickly that your pipeline is the lifeblood of your business

… especially when you work on a project-by-project basis.

You need a way to prospect for new leads. Of course, you can’t convert all new leads into new business, so you need a steady stream of them to replenish the opportunities you lose. When you do a close a deal, it’s time to celebrate! But only for a moment, because then it’s time to do what you do best: creating and delivering value to your client.

So how can you go about building one?

 

I explored many different options, with mixed success.

 
 
 

You could join networking groups.

 

These are great for intimate meetings with people. Some may be good prospects for your business. But events like this are time-consuming. When you consider that sales is a numbers game, this is not the best way to grow a pipeline, the success of which we measure by the  numbers. While networking events are great for building deeper relationships, you're going to need to scale the way you do this.

 
 
 

What about getting a booth at a conference or trade show?

 

According to Exhibitor Magazine, you should set aside 1/3 of your budget for the actual booth space. The industry standard cost for this is $138 per foot of floor space. So let's say you go with a 10x10 space. That would set you back $13,800. Multiply that by 3 and you get to a $41,400 budget for all expenses related to your exhibit: travel & lodging, show services, exhibit design & construction, shipping, promo material etc. This is an expensive option! Plus, trade show floors are not exactly ideal environments for in-depth, 1-on-1 conversations. You're relying more on brand recognition, hoping leads you talk to will follow up with you after the event.

 
 
 

What about online traffic?

 

SEO and paid traffic can be converted to leads on your website, so you can follow up with each of them 1-on-1. This is true, and certainly a viable option. But you cannot rely on this alone.

For one, it takes a long time to build a pipeline this way. Your copy needs to be perfect. Your conversion funnel needs to be constantly measured and tweaked. In the case of paid traffic, the meter is running the whole time; costs are stacking up!

But, this is far more challenging with B2B leads.

Your prospecting needs to be aimed at the user, while the budget holder is often a different person.

With direct-to-consumer advertising you’re moving the same person down the Awareness > Consideration > Decision funnel.

With B2B leads, there is a breakdown and you end up having to convert multiple people with very different perspectives in order to close your deal.

To do this, you need a deeper relationship with the user of your product or service - the person who is going to be your internal advocate for ultimately buying from you.
